Population by place of residence in 1795
The map below shows the regional distribution of the population of the Netherlands (Batavian Republic) by place of residence, according to the first Dutch population census in 1795. After the French revolution the Dutch Republic was renamed Batavian Republic in 1795. The Batavian and French republics signed a treaty, according to which both states formed a defensive alliance; the Batavian Republic ceded Dutch Flanders, Maastricht and Venlo to France.
The number of inhabitants ranges from 3 in Klein-Waspik (at that time province of Holland; nowadays province of North-Brabant) to 217,024 in Amsterdam. The average number of inhabitants per place of residence is 1,040.
