The quality of migration statistics in many European countries is still poor. NIDI activities focus on how to improve the quality and comparability of migration statistics. For this purpose NIDI develops methods to accurately estimate missing data in order to generate a synthetic database on international migration in Europe. The IMEM project is aimed to develop a Bayesian statistical model for estimating migration flows which will use data from different sources as well as qualitative judgments.

As the number of international migrants has increased, immigration and integration issues have gained importance. This development has generated much research on the structural and cultural position of migrants in the host society. However, there has not yet been much research of the life course and population dynamics in migrant families. The FaMiLife project analyses events in different life domains in order to explain full life trajectories. Not only the causes but also the consequences of life course decisions will be examined. The project will examine how migration affects the individual life course. In the CHOICES project life course analysis is applied to examine the decision of migrants to return.
