Vacancy for a PhD position “Health and working longer”

26 June 2018

The Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) has a vacancy for a:

PhD candidate (1.0 fte)

for the project “Health and working longer”.

Job description
The aim of this PhD project is to estimate and project the impact of the increase in the statutory retirement age on the ability of older employees to work longer, their health and the risk of becoming employed or disabled. Since health tends to deteriorate with increasing age, the increase in the “AOW pension age” could lead to more older workers having to work longer even though their health may be poor or to an increase in the use of unemployment or disability benefits. Using longitudinal data the PhD candidate will estimate transition rates describing the transitions between work, retirement, health, disability and unemployment. The PhD candidate will use these transition rates in a multistate model to make projections of labour force participation, health status and the use of social benefits for new generations of older workers.

The PhD candidate will write a dissertation, based on a set of research articles, publishable in international refereed journals.

Main tasks:

  • Writing academic articles
  • Estimation of transition rates based on longitudinal data
  • Calculation of scenarios using a multistate model
  • Contribution to dissemination of research findings

Candidates should have:

  • Completed a research master in demography, economics, social sciences, or a comparable background;
  • Solid knowledge of statistical methods;
  • Knowledge of the (Dutch) labour market;
  • Excellent knowledge of Dutch and English;
  • Good writing and social skills.

Conditions of employment:
The initial appointment will be for a period of one year. After a positive evaluation, the appointment will be extended for another three years. A psychological assessment may be part of the selection procedure. The gross monthly salary will be between € 2,222 (year 1) and € 2,840 (year 4). Benefits include pension contribution, annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.
