In addition, he teaches archaeology at the Faculty of Arts of VU University Amsterdam. He directs an international research project that studies the development of early farming communities in northwest Turkey, with excavations at the Neolithic site of Barcın Höyük. He has also worked on the prehistory and landscape archaeology of the Dutch region of Noord-Brabant. His dissertation on this topic, Local Identities, was published by Amsterdam University Press and received the Research Prize of the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation.
