Wiro Niessen research interests are in the field of biomedical imaging, where his group develops computer-aided techniques for improving image-based (e.g. MRI, CT) diagnosis and therapy support.
Research areas comprise image analysis for improved diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular disease, for early and differential diagnosis of neurodegenerative disease, for quantifying treatment effects in cancer therapy, and for analyzing processes at the molecular and cellular level. In addition, the group is involved in image guided interventions, in which the surgeon navigates using imaging data (similar to car navigation), and can thus operate with less damage for the patient.
