The 2018 Annual Conference of the British Society for Population Studies (BSPS) will be held at the University of Winchester, 10-12 September.

Call for innovative proposals for BSPS Conference 2018

In 2018, BSPS will welcome Dutch demographers from the Netherlands Demographic Society (NVD), who are expected to convene special sessions looking at the Dutch demographic experience, and/or comparatives with the UK. Additionally, it is anticipated the Conference will have a theme of the impact of demographic change on social policy.

Regular Conference strands (the research topics BSPS uses to organize the call for papers) may include ageing; ethnicity & religion; families & households; fertility & reproductive health; health, mortality & the life course; historical demography; innovative data, methods & models; local & small area demography; migration & mobilities; posters. Members and non-members are invited to suggest ideas for innovative themes within these strands to be highlighted as an area of particular interest in the call for papers. These might focus on a particular methodological or substantive topic or a specific data set, but would need to attract sufficient submissions to be viable if run as a special session. New & innovative strands can also be suggested  - see the strands from previous conferences by selecting from the menu on the left.

The standard session format comprises a 90-minute session with 3 – 4 research presentations, but variations are possible. Innovative formats such as panels, forums, training sessions, sessions with discussant, discussions, workshops, or sessions aimed at a particular constituency (such as postgraduate students or local authority participants) would be very welcome.

Expressions of interest for organizing a strand are also welcome, from those who would be willing to solicit contributions from a wide range of sources and to allocate papers into coherent sessions.

Please be as specific as possible when filling in the proposal form and include any evidence you have that a particular theme or new strand would attract enough submissions to form a 3-4 paper session. For proposed workshops or training sessions, please indicate who would be  expected to organize and lead the session at the Conference and confirm that those individuals have been approached and are willing to take on that work..

All suggestions will be considered by BSPS Council at their mid-January meeting, after which we will let you know the outcome.  The call for papers will be issued in January 2018 & all submissions will be via the online submissions site. After the close of the call for papers, strand organisers take overall responsibility for selecting suitable papers for oral or poster presentation.
